My personal experience with this was after looking un der a microscope and seeing it bind/dilute with a lot of different pigments, dynamic black was the one I chose for my grey wash. It is not much different than pixels on a tv, the smaller the molecule the smaller it is to the eye and that is what makes it smooth when you look at it. This will take your realism game to the next level.
